Aug 21, 2011 · My car is coming to a 60000 mile service.. Toyota said the tapping may get slightly louder ( as in my car it is audible slightly when standing outside the car and at idle when warmed) but this is not really a problem just an annoyance and can be resolved slightly with a valve clearance adjustment :) hope that helps
The valve adjustment requires removal of the adjusting shims (Tool kit J-37141 available from Kent-Moore Tool or a Toyota equivalent No. 09248-55010) and accurate measurement of the shims with a micrometer. A selection of replacement shims (refer to parts department of your Toyota dealer) is also required. I'm not a mechanic, but I've searched my problem, and researched "lifter ticks" and adjusting valves. It's obviously a huge deal to unseal a Toyota engine that was designed to stay sealed forever. And apparently adjusting the valves in the Gen II is also pretty difficult. Jul 04, 2016 · Hello all, I have a 2003 Toyota Corolla. When I took my car in last month for my 90K service, the dealer told me that I need to do an “engine valve adjustment” at 90K, and they were gonna charge me $300 for that. I declined the service at that time, but I’m wondering whether this is actually something that I should do. Please advice!
